Skin Types: Which One Are You?
A lot of people are using the wrong products for their skin as they are blissfully unaware of the type of skin they have. Some people choose their products from a recommendation of a friend or, I know it sounds silly (I have been a culprit of the same), what type of smell it has. However it is vitally important in achieving that healthy glow to use the correct product for your skin type, for example if you have oily skin and you use a product that is designed for dry skin your face will appear oilier as the day goes on. In this article I will outline each skin type and things to look for in your own skin to determine these factors. If you are still unsure of your skin type I recommend getting your skin professionally assessed here at ENT Wellbeing Skincare.
There is a simple test you can use at home to determine your skin type. Take a clean facial tissue and wipe your face in the morning when you have just woken up. If the tissue has no oil at all and your skin feels smooth and supple then you more than likely have normal skin. If you have dry skin again there will be no oil present on the tissue however your skin will feel rough, tight and flaky. If you have oily skin there will be oil present on the tissue correlative to the cheeks, forehead and nose. If you have combination skin the tissue will be clean after wiping your cheeks however will have facial oil present on the tissue when you rub your forehead, nose and chin.
Skin types
Normal – For those of you that have this skin type count your lucky stars, you have it all. Your skin is perfectly balanced. Your skin doesn’t have too much oil, is not too dry, it’s just right. It has the perfect combination of moisture and oil balance with good elasticity. You have a lovely even skin tone and those pesky pores are very minimal. You’re not limited to the types of products you can buy as there is a wide range available to you. You very rarely suffer from breakouts and there is no change to your skin throughout the day. Your skin appears smooth, clear and healthy, lucky you!
Dry – This is a very common skin type. The reason a person suffers from dryness is that their skin does not retain moisture. When a person’s skin is dry they are more susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles. A shortage of oil production makes the skin flaky and very fragile this in turn minimizes its ability to act as a protective barrier. When the protective barrier is compromised the skin is more sensitive to the environmental elements such as pollution, wind, UV rays etc. This type of skin often appears rough, tight or dry in the afternoon. This skin type can also be determined by small pores.
Oily – This skin type is more prevalent in adolescence however is often seen throughout adulthood. This skin type can be determined by larger pores that tend to get clogged. The skin produces too much oil and has a shiny, greasy appearance. People with this skin type are prone to breakouts, blemishes, pimples and blackheads. The dead skin cells are not shed as quickly so the skin appears plumper. People with oily skin are not as prone to wrinkles as a person with dry skin.
Combination – People with this skin type have both oily and dry patches of skin with the forehead, nose and chin (T-zone) usually being the oily part. The dry skin is usually located around the cheeks and the eyes. Breakouts usually happen around the chin, forehead and nose. Combination skin is problematic to manage as different products are needed for different areas of the face.
Sensitive – This skin is usually dry, has that tightening feeling and becomes irritated and inflamed easily. This skin type is the most fragile of them all and is prone to sunburn. Commonly, sensitive skin develops red scaly areas and can be itchy. It is the most problematic of the skin types and needs special care.
