Muscle relaxant injections treatment for hyperhidrosis
Muscle relaxant injections are frequently associated with its cosmetic uses. However, muscle relaxant injections to stop sweating (hyperhidrosis) is an accepted treatment for a condition that is often embarrassing and activity limiting for the sufferer. In Australia, muscle relaxant injections treatment for sweating is covered under Medicare.
As sweat is linked to malodour, some people may think that excessive sweating is linked with poor hygiene. The cause of excessive sweating is unknown, however we do know that perspiration is mediated by the hypothalamus, the brain’s thermoregulator.
For all of us, perspiration plays a role in normal body function, thermoregulation. When the body is stimulated, eccrine (all over the body, heat responsive sweating) and apocrine (focal and adrenaline mediated) sweat gland production increases. Water, sodium, urea and lactate are excreted in perspiration, providing an environment that not only has its own unique smell, but one that bacteria proliferate well in. Sufferers of hyperhidrosis become increasingly self conscious of their body image and odour. Managing the symptoms is at the core of treatment.
Excessive sweating under the arms
Some of us may remember what it was like to use deodorant for the first time in our teenage years. Driven by a need to avoid standing out as the smelly kid, we reached for a shelf brand that delivered hours of a perspiration free life.
Unfortunately, for individuals with focal axillary hyperdrosis (excessive sweating in the armpits) a lot of time and money is often invested in trying to find solutions. Eventually, an individual may seek medical help and use prescription antiperspirants to manage excessive sweating. Prescription antiperspirants may not provide daily relief and longer term symptom control is possible.
Muscle relaxant injections to stop sweating under the arms
Muscle relaxant injection treatment to stop sweating is approved for use in Australia and studies have shown that it is a successful treatment. The Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale [HDSS] is used to determine the impact that excessive sweating has on an individual’s life. Patient centred care and quality of life improvement is at the core of management of excessive sweating by using muscle relaxant injections.
Psychologically, excessive sweating and the frequent need to manage self image (frequent changing of clothes, use of perfumes, showering) can cause embarrassment, shame and self consciousness. Sufferers of hyperhidrosis are more likely to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Anxiety increases stress hormones, which stimulate sweat glands. An increase in excessive sweating causes distress to the patient, causing further anxiety. Studies show that this cycle can be broken.
In a large randomised control study, patients who reported a pre-treatment HDSS score of three or four out of four, were administered muscle relaxant injections for focal hyperhidrosis in the armpit. Treatment reduced their severity score by an average of two points after being treated with this treatment to stop sweating. Results lasted around six months and 22% of patients had lasting results 52 weeks after treatment. Further studies have shown that there are minimal negative side effects and there is a dramatic improvement in the quality of life for patients with focal hyperhidrosis.
Muscle relaxant injections to stop sweating in other areas
Muscle relaxant injections treatment has also been successfully used in other countries to stop excessive sweating in other areas of the body. Other areas where focal hyperhidrosis occurs are the forehead, back and palms of the hand, known as palmar hyperhidrosis. This treatment treatment for palmar hyperhidrosis shows a 90% success rate, improving the quality of life by offering an alternative to conventional treatments which are inconvenient and time consuming.
