As a parent, one of the best things you can do for your children is to encourage them to stick to a healthy diet. A well balanced and nutritional diet enables children to have more energy, focus in school, maintain a healthy weight, and it reduces their risk of developing many different illnesses.
However, getting a child to develop healthier eating habits can feel like an unwinnable battle, especially with the popularity of sugary snacks and fast food. Here are just a few tips that you can use to hopefully get your children on the path toward healthier eating habits that will last a lifetime.
Create a Routine
Have regular family dinners at set times. Develop a menu of home-cooked and nutritious meals that the entire family enjoys. Most restaurants meals use a lot more fat, oil, and sugar than home-cooked recipes. Having the meals at regular times every day will also promote healthy eating habits because the children’s’ bodies will grow accustomed to eating at those times and will feel less of a need to snack in between meals.
Smaller Portion Sizes
Restaurants also encourage portion sizes that are much too large. Never force a child to eat more than they want to, and do not restrict their activities if they refuse to eat.
Make Food Educational
Children will understand the importance of their diet more if you teach them where their food comes from and how it is prepared. Have your kids choose recipes, go grocery shopping, cook, or even plant a vegetable garden with you. Their involvement in these activities can actually make them more interested and more excited about eating healthier.
