About Skin Surgery
The skin is a huge organ that is exposed to a tremendous number of outside influences and is susceptible to a wide array of conditions and ailments. Because of this there are many different types of skin surgery. For many people, when they hear “skin surgery,” they automatically think of cosmetic procedures that are performed to improve the aesthetic look of the skin.
Some of the procedures that dermatologists can perform to address different issues patients are experiencing include:
Skin removal or skin tightening surgeries
These procedures are especially common for patients that have recently lost a considerable amount of weight and want to remove the excess skin that is a common side effect of tremendous weight gain. In these surgeries skin is actually cut away and the other sides of skin are pulled together and stitched.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is not necessarily considered a “surgery”, this intensive procedure involves a deep exfoliation with the purpose of taking away rough or dull layers of the skin to reveal smoother, younger looking skin.
Cosmetic injections
Cosmetic injection procedures involve injecting pharmaceutical grade fillers into different areas of the face that are experiencing issues such as deep wrinkles, lines, or lack of fullness.
Other types of skin surgery
Of course, there are other types of skin surgery, as well. Skin cancer is an often-forgotten killer, and it is essential that it is treated aggressively in order to protect the health of the patient.
The most advanced form of skin surgery for skin cancer is referred to as the Mohs Micrographic outpatient surgery. This procedure involves mapping the skin with a microscope and then removing the cancerous areas layer by layer. This achieves a total removal of the cancerous area, right down to the roots. One major benefit of this type of surgery is that it leaves healthy tissue primarily intact and unharmed.
