Drink calories – how many calories are in your drinks?
Drink calories – where fluids other than water have extra energy associated with them but don’t offer much else nutrition wise. Water is the best drink out there; we all know it and have heard it many times. However, there are times when the occasion calls for something different, a soft drink at a birthday party or an orange juice with breakfast. So what does this translate to nutritionally? This article will look at the calories (in terms of teaspoons of sugar) that are found in drinks that many people consume on a regular basis.
The following pictures show the teaspoons of sugar in each glass of drink where 1 teaspoon is equal to 4g of sugar. Healthier drinks are labelled in green.
Just by looking at the above figures, it’s clear that coke is highest in terms of sugar. This is the added sugar or “drink calories” that was discussed earlier i.e. energy without any other nutrients the body needs.
When looking at the milk which has 3 teaspoons of sugar it would be easy to assume that it is less healthy, however it is important to remember that this is the natural sugar found in milk called lactose, not the added sugar like that found in the soft drinks.
Why are “drink calories” a concern?
These drink calories are concerning because people have a tendency to consume large portions, which with the added sugar can lead to health problems such as weight troubles. For example, consuming a can of coke (375ml), which has 39.8g of sugar adds approximately 680kJ (161Cal) to a person’s daily intake.
These drinks are discretionary choices – they can be included as part of a balanced diet, but in small amounts and not every day.
