Some professionals make the decision to pursue a Master of Speech Pathology, but this is not required. It is important to ensure that the college program that is accredited. If you do not go to an accredited school, then you will not be able to get the licensing you need to practice as a speech therapist.
Once you have gotten your degree, then the next step will be to apply to get your license. In Australia, that means becoming a member of Speech Pathology Australia (SPA). You must become a member of this organization in order to become a therapist.
After you have gotten your education and licensing, you will have a number of different options. If you wish to be a general pathologist in speech, then you can start working right away. If you wish to concentrate in a certain area, like speech pathology for children or adult stroke victims or any other type, then you may need to consider extra training courses for this concentration.
You have a number of different job paths you could consider when you become a speech therapist.
