Sometimes it can be tricky finding enough time to get speech therapy homework done and ideas for fun games to play with your kids when working on speech errors can be tricky to come up with. Here are some fun games that you can play to target speech sound errors as well as make time fly during a long car trip
One of those classic car games that you probably already play can be easily modified into a speech game. Start by selecting one position for the target sounds such as ‘s’ at the start of words. The game can then begin by saying “I spy with my little eye something beginning with ‘s’. Your child must then name all the things starting with ‘s’ around the car such as ‘street’, ‘sign’ etc until they guess the right word. The same can be done for words with ‘s’ at the end however the game will start with the phrase “I spy with my little eye something ending with ‘s’”, and words with ‘s’ in the middle will start with the phrase “I spy with my little eye something with ‘s’ in it”.
Singing Nursery Rhymes
The car can be a great place to develop language through nursery rhymes. This is done best by choosing nursery rhymes that can be paired with lots of actions and gestures and nouns that can be seen in the car. For example the nursery rhyme “wheels on the bus” has a lot of fun actions such as the wheels turning and the doors opening and closing which can be modelled to help your child understand the language being used in the rhyme. There are always lots of buses on the road to point to as well to help with comprehension of the nouns in the rhyme such as ‘bus, wheels, doors’ etc.
