Cassie White—personal trainer, yoga instructor and health journalist—believes that you should make your New Year’s resolutions early in order to stick with them. Every January, an onslaught of people are hitting the gym, getting up early, quitting smoking and eating clean… and many of them inevitably fail.
White and other trainers like her certainly benefit from the New Year resolution boom, and the impact it has on the fitness and health industry is evident:
“It’s not that we don’t try to do something about our holiday blowouts. Like clockwork, at the start of every year, it’s DEFCON 1 in my gym. The guilt, shame and unrealistic New Year’s resolutions propel everyone out of bed and into spin class. My gym becomes some kind of reverse panic room, where the mayhem is contained inside.”
There is research to suggest that the weight we can put on during the silly season can stick around until September. This is even more reason to get into good habits earlier on in the year. Is it just lack of discipline, or is there something wrong in the planning? White certainly thinks so, and discusses way to stick to your plans:
“So why not consider beginning (or continuing to stick with) a solid exercise (and overall health) routine before the holidays this year? You’ll be much more likely to have a healthier mindset by the time the festive season is in full swing. You’ll be more likely to squeeze in a workout before Christmas drinks… and find something active to do instead of sitting on your backside in front of Carols in the Domain/National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation/the Boxing Day Test.”
Her four tips for keeping your early resolutions include; resisting binging; set realistic expectations about food; plan for exercise; and remind yourself about your end-goals.
