‘this = that: a life-size photo guide to food serves’ comes in both an adult’s version and a child’s version
(this = that: a life-size photo guide to kids’ food serves). The books tackle common dietary issues experienced by the general population and in particular, those adults trying to manage their weight.
It is one thing to educate an individual on how to eat healthy and even the appropriate portion sizes but sometimes this can be difficult to translate in to real life – the ‘this = that’ books are a perfect solution.

What are the ‘this = that’ books about?
The children’s and adult’s ‘this = that’ books provide an excellent visual guide to assist in making healthy eating easier. Not only this but the books and images are presented beautifully with plenty of vibrant colours that makes using them fun with a high standard of quality maintained throughout.
The books offer over 400 images of a wide variety of food and drinks, all life size! The photos demonstrate what a single serving size of particular foods/drinks look like – this is where the life-sized portrayal comes in handy and provides a source to compare the foods/drinks too.
All photographed foods are equal in energy to one another (hence the title ‘this = that’), this allows people to compare different quantities of food that have the same energy value.
The foods and drinks are broken up in to groups that have then been colour coded to make them easy to flip to. The groups include fruit, vegetables, grain foods, meat, dairy, fats and extras (including alcohol in the adult book).
At the beginning of the two books, clear and simple instructions on how best to use them have been provided. There is also some interesting background information on how portion sizes have changed over time and the importance of healthy eating. Comprehensive tables are provided at the back of the books that detail the composition of all the foods photographed e.g. the energy, fat, protein and carbohydrate content.
this = that child size
This book starts by covering the importance of healthy eating for your child. The images act as a guide for parents to make healthy selections for their children and to recognise what a serve of food or drink consists of. It is important to note that the book was not developed as a diet book for weight loss but rather to provide support and guidance for healthy eating.
This book can also be great for encouraging children to try new foods and to learn about them. It as well is useful and provides some tips for combating fussy eaters!
this = that
At the back of the book is a guide on ways to increase flavour in food without increasing the energy content of the meal. This is useful, as many commercial sauces/condiments will provide high levels of energy. ‘this = that’ eliminates the need for calorie counting for individuals trying to manage their weight.
‘this = that’ and ‘this = that child size’ are ideal books for anyone wanting help with making healthier choices. The concept of a serving size can vary enormously amongst individuals and these books clear up the confusion by providing life sized images for comparison. this = that books are clear, simple and a lot of fun to even just look through – for adults and children! They are suitable for practitioners or the general public and I personally have found them of great value when demonstrating portion sizes.
